FAQs

Why do this study?

Individuals living in precarious housing may be affected by poverty, illness, intergenerational trauma, and other barriers to health and wellness. Researchers from University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University are interested in characterizing the relative strengths and challenges faced by individuals to support health and wellness in the DTES community.  By identifying and prioritizing the needs of DTES residents, policymakers and healthcare providers will be better equipped to provide the necessary systems of care and attention these individuals need to thrive.

What’s in it for the participants?

No one would commit to a 5 or 10 year study without some form of compensation, and we wouldn’t expect anyone to do so. Participants are given a stipend for every visit they make to the Hotel Study for monthly assessments. For those assessments that take more time, like MRI and Neuro-cognitive testing, the stipend is slightly higher.

Another great motivator is the sense of contribution that participants can feel to the betterment of their community, and the connectivity that arises from regular follow-ups. Relationships are developed, and support networks are strengthened through interaction with our research assistants and in turn the healthcare providers.

Who funds the Hotel Study?

The Hotel Study is a Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) grant funded project, run through the University of British Columbia’s Department of Psychiatry and Simon Fraser University’s Department of Psychology. The Hotel Study also gains further support and funding through the organizations of BC Mental Health Foundation, St. Paul’s Foundation, and VGH + UBC Hospital Foundation.

How many people are enrolled in the study?

Currently we have approximately 450 participants enrolled, however on a monthly basis we typically see 350 on average. Like all of us, participants lives and lifestyle patterns change, so its not uncommon for participants to come and go throughout the duration of the study.

Is continued participation mandatory?

No. Participation is always voluntary, and participants are free to withdraw or leave the study at any time. Participants are also able to return to the study if they have withdrawn, as long as they are still within the projected 10 year time frame.

Is the study currently enrolling new participants?

At this time the study is not enrolling new participants, however as the study grows, and the scope of research expands, we select new sites for recruitment.

Is the study being used to promote a certain pharmaceutical drug?

No. The Hotel Study is strictly an observational study. There is no partnership with any pharmaceutical company or drug. We are however strong advocates for connecting individuals with healthcare providers when needed, or if the individual does not currently access these services.

Who do I contact if I have more questions?

The easiest and most reliable method of contacting us is through email. The study has a designated email address which is shown on the bottom of this page. A research assistant will be in contact at our earliest ability to answer any further questions.
